Pre-Civil War Antique Pennsylvania Slant Front Chippendale Desk
$1,250.00
Offered here is an exceptional late 18th-century slant-front desk crafted from solid black walnut and cherry. This handsome piece features a fall-front writing surface that opens to reveal an attractive fitted interior with burlwood drawer fronts and mail compartments, combining both functionality and decorative appeal. Distinctive batwing brass pulls enhance the desk's period character, while the original locking mechanism remains functional and is accompanied by a key.
During the cleaning and examination of the desk, a cased daguerreotype photograph and an 1852 volume of Fireside Poetry were discovered within the interior, providing an intriguing glimpse into the desk's long history and period of use. Based on construction details, particularly the hand-built backboards and early craftsmanship techniques, as well as consultation with experienced antique professionals, the desk is believed to have originated in the late 1700s and to have undergone sympathetic restorations over the course of its life.
The interior drawer construction exhibits hand-cut dovetail joinery with visible scribe marks, further supporting its early origin. Provenance indicates the desk descended through a family of undertakers and cabinetmakers who migrated from the Philadelphia region to south-central Pennsylvania during the early 19th century. At that time, funeral directors were often accomplished cabinetmakers, and this family carefully preserved and displayed quality furnishings such as this desk within their business for generations.
As expected of an antique approaching 250 years of age, the desk has received restoration and maintenance throughout its lifetime. The three lower drawers are later replacements, and the slant-front writing surface appears to have been professionally restored many decades ago, evidenced by relocated hinge positions visible upon close inspection. The base has also undergone restoration to ensure continued structural integrity and usability. These repairs are consistent with the responsible preservation of a significant period piece and do not detract from its historical charm or decorative presence.
This is a remarkable example of early American craftsmanship, offering both historical significance and practical functionality. Please review the photographs carefully and feel free to contact us with any questions.
