This pair of antique cast iron urns, distinguished by an elegant lattice design, was crafted in France in the early 20th century. Of notable historical importance, the urns were originally installed at the entrance to the Bowie Racecourse in Maryland at the time of its opening and remained in place until the mid-20th century, when they were acquired by a racecourse employee.

In October 1914, the Bowie Race Track — then known as Prince George’s Park — celebrated its inaugural season. The site was strategically chosen for its proximity to Baltimore, Annapolis, and Washington, D.C., as well as its accessibility via an electric railroad connecting the three cities. Dedicated race trains transported visitors from these urban centers and beyond, with a round-trip fare of 65 cents from Baltimore. Admission to the track was one dollar.

Today, these urns stand as both refined decorative elements and tangible relics of early American horse racing history.

Both urns are in decent condition for their age and show expected signs of wear from years of use and exposure. There are no broken parts to note, though one urn has retained more of its original paint than the other. Overall, they remain a wonderful piece of racing history and are ready for their next home.
