Based on our research, this desk dates to circa 1850 and originated in the Baltimore, Maryland area. The desk was originally owned by George P. Thomas Sr., who left a handwritten note inside the desk dated December 24, 1874, expressing his wish to leave the desk to his son, George P. Thomas Jr. A copy of this letter is included in our photos for reference.
The Thomas family was involved in the rubber business in Baltimore, and further research uncovered George P. Thomas Jr.’s obituary, noting that he entered the rubber industry himself in 1887—adding an additional layer of documented provenance to this piece.
The desk is constructed in two sections. The upper portion features a large fall-front writing surface with pigeonholes for correspondence, which rests on a base containing two drawers. The desk retains its original key, which operates the upper fall-front door. The two lower drawers have locks but are not functional with the key provided.
Condition-wise, the piece shows honest wear consistent with age and use. There is some veneer loss at the knee area of the base, visible in the photos, as well as general surface wear throughout. A small repair was made to the left side of the upper section, visible when the fall-front is opened. Despite these age-related imperfections, the desk remains sturdy and functional.
This is a remarkable piece of 19th-century American furniture with documented family provenance, ready for its next chapter.
